How To Colour Blend with Modern Calligraphy
Colour Blending is a beautifully simple technique, which I am asked about so often! It’s one of those modern calligraphy techniques that when you know it, you’ll fly! But you need to know the simple steps to get started…
You will need:
2 different colours of brush pen - preferably need to be the same brand
Something flat and plastic / glass - the bottom of a jam jar, a tile, a crisp packet will do!
Regarding the pens, it's important to have the same brand because you'll know that the "make up" of the pens are the same so this will work - you don't want to mix a water based pen with an acrylic pen. If you're happy that the different brands are the same make up then no problem. My personal choices would either be Ecoline or Pentel Brush Sign. Definitely don't use black!
Step 1 - Colour your darker pen onto your plastic / glass then put the cap back on and leave it to one side
Step 2 - Take your lighter colour pen and "pick up" the colour from Step 1. You can turn the pen over to ensure that the colour is picked up all around the nib
Step 3 - Write onto your paper / card and watch the pen turn from the darker colour to the lighter colour.
It really is that easy! Your lighter pen won't be ruined because it will just go back to its original colour as soon as the other colour has run out.
Top Tip
Remember to cross your T's and dot your I's as you go rather than at the end of the word.
If your darker colour is lasting a little longer than you hoped, just make a few strokes onto a separate piece of paper.
The Ecoline pens come with a blender so you can create an ombre effect – lovely!
